Abstract

We report from a case study of the implementation of an electronic whiteboard system at two emergency departments at Danish hospitals. The purpose of such whiteboards is to support the clinicians in maintaining an overview of the patients at the department. The electronic whiteboard system was designed in collaboration with clinicians from the departments, present more information, and allow some automated updating, as compared to the existing dry-erase whiteboard. Based on observations supported by interviews we describe the implementation of the whiteboard at the two emergency departments, the improvisational process following the implementation, and the use and reconfiguration of the system and work practices by the clinicians.

Key words: Electronic whiteboards; organisational implementation; improvisational change management; healthcare informatics.
